A late Thursday afternoon shooting at the start of rush hour at a busy Opa-locka intersection left one man dead and another fighting for his life, police said.

Few details were immediately available. But Opa-locka Police Chief James Dobson said the vehicle, a white four-door car, was shot up in the center of the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and Ali Baba Avenue. The car, he said, careened into another vehicle in the intersection, closing the roadway to traffic.

The shooter, or shooters, fled. The man who survived the shooting was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Dobson said police had no initial witnesses.

Because it’s a homicide, Miami-Dade police have taken over the investigation. As of 4:25 p.m. they hadn’t yet arrived on the scene, Dobson said.
