An 8-year-old girl died on her way to school on Monday when a crash ejected her from a minivan that then rolled on top of her.
Miramar Fire Rescue removed the girl from the wreckage at Miramar Boulevard and Red Road, but she was declared dead after being flown to Hollywood’s Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition. Her mother, the minivan’s driver, went to Memorial Regional as a ground trauma alert.
Names are being withheld until other family members are notified.
Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said mother and daughter were running late for school around 9:30 a.m. as the minivan headed west on Miramar Boulevard. Rues said witnesses told police the minivan ran a red light at Miramar and Red. A Ford pickup truck T-boned the minivan, sending it spinning and flinging the girl out of the vehicle. The minivan struck another car before landing atop the girl.
Whether speed played a role in the crash isn’t certain, but the girl was not wearing her seat belt, Rues said.
