As police gathered evidence and tried to resuscitate a man who had been shot just west of Coconut Grove, they say Michael Fernandez stuck around and took in the scene.
A few minutes later, the 28-year-old was arrested and charged with the murder of Paulo Sanchez, 36. Fernandez remained in jail Friday morning after being denied bond.
Fernandez told police he didn’t know how many times he struck Sanchez on Wednesday night. But police said he admitted to the crime and several people witnessed the shooting.
“Witnesses on the scene stated they saw the defendant shoot the victim multiple times,” the arresting officer wrote in the suspect’s arrest form.
Miami Police Spokeswoman Kiara Delva said two days after the shooting, police were still trying to figure out what sparked it.
“That’s kind of up in the air,” she said. “At this point it’s all speculation.”
According to Fernandez’s arrest form, Miami police and fire rescue were alerted to a shooting at 3081 SW 27th Lane at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. When they got there they found Sanchez’s lifeless body. Police said Sanchez was shot in the neck and the back.
After confronting Fernandez, police said he told them he took a Glock 9mm handgun out of his front shorts pocket and fired at Sanchez three times from about 10 feet away. As Sanchez tried to get away, Fernandez said he fired one more time towards his back.
Police soon determined that Fernandez did not have a concealed weapons permit. He was charged with second-degree murder and carrying a concealed firearm.
