On view now through April 3, 2020 – Before digital animation, Japanese artists relied on intricate drawings and paintings to create their animated films. To create the magic of the films in this exhibit, artists started with location photographs which became intricate sketches, which became paintings that were filmed. When curator Stefan Riekeles of Berlin started gathering all these pieces, the makers didn’t even consider them art! But Riekeles knew that each step in the animation process was so carefully crafted it could live on its own as a work to be displayed. This is the basis for Anime Architecture, which focuses on surroundings rather than characters. Watch to find out why.

Films featured in this exhibit include:

-Patlabor: The Movie

-Tezuka Osamu’s Metropolis

-Ghost in the Shell

-Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
