In late 2015 Locust Projects, an exhibition space in Miami dedicated to contemporary art, hosted “Pore” an exhibition from Martha Friedman, a Brooklyn-based artist. One of the highlights of the two-month exhibition included a performance featuring choreographer/dancer Silas Riener. According to Elizabeth Shannon, Exhibitions and Programming Director at Locust Projects:

Friedman developed “Pore” from her interest in the substances that our bodies contain, and the four humors, which form the foundation of Western medicine. The balance of the humors—of blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile—were thought to influence a person’s character and mood. The performance was devised by Martha and Riener. Together they explored movements and materials that could encapsulate the characteristics associated with each humor. Silas performs choreographed movements while wearing one of four costumes, each attached to a giant colored sheet that Martha created by pouring a thousand pounds of rubber onto the floor. These sheets were then rigged from the rafters, blurring the boundary between sculpture and backdrop. The costumes and sheets, plus other sculptural elements, formed a complete exhibition that existed independent of the performance.

Art Loft is proud to broadcast a documentary of the performance, produced by The Johnson Administration, as a special edition of the program.
