The mother behind what has become an iconic photo taken not long after the Parkland school tragedy took place has a sharp message for the National Rifle Association and what she calls their quote “despicable and vile” comments in the aftermath of the shooting.

With disgust, Cathi Rush listened to NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch call crying white mothers “ratings gold” while speaking at the annual CPAC convention last week just outside of Washington, D.C.

Rush took it personally – because she is the one of two woman seen in a picture taken outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14th, crying in the arms of another mother also in tears after 17 people were killed inside the school.

“We were just screaming and crying together. I didn’t know about my children and I really hope that Dana from the NRA never has to experience that,” Rush told NBC 6.

“I mean, does she have no sympathy, no empathy at all,” Rush said. “I truly believe that its vile, it’s a wretched disgusting thing for her to say.”

When Rush heard about the shooting, she rushed to the high school as quickly as possible. Her 9th grade son sheltered in place while her 11th grade son evacuated.

“I don’t know that it was targeted toward me specifically,” Rush said when asked about Loesch’s comments. “There were lots of moms crying in lots of pictures. I wasn’t the only one, but that photo of me – I hate that picture. You can’t even believe how much I hate that picture.”

Rush says both of her children will return to the school on Wednesday as classes resume for the first time since the mass shooting.
