Months after having their lives saved from being part of a festival in China where they were to be eaten, dozens of dogs had the chance to find forever homes in South Florida during the annual Clear The Shelters events.

Potential owners ventured to the Good Karma Pet Rescue in Hallandale, which took part in bringing the animals to the area along with the Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Palm Beach County.

Over 35 dogs were up for adoptions during the event on Saturday, saved in June after the groups adopted hundreds of dogs from the festival where they were set to be slaughtered and later eaten as part of a traditional event.

“A lot of the dogs had dental issues and they were malnourished. Their skin was bad and they had a lot of fungal issues,” said Devon Soto from Good Karma Pet Rescue. “The rescuers did a really good job of getting them ready and good enough condition to get on this flight.”

Good Karma Pet Rescue, founded in 2011, is a network of foster homes for animals spanning across Miami-Dade and Broward counties north into the Treasure Coast.
