Explaining the fight between Airbnb and Miami-Dade municipalities

Mar 22, 2017

Miami-Dade County is one of the top five Airbnb destinations in the country, with 6,800 hosts renting their homes. But for the past year, Miami Beach has been fining locals who rent on platforms like Airbnb $20,000 for each violation. That has amounted to $5 million in fines since March 2016. Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine has vocally opposed Airbnb, saying he loves the service, “but not in Miami Beach.” The issue is spilling into the city of Miami, where Mayor Tomas Regalado is sponsoring an ordinance that would largely ban short-term rentals. Meanwhile, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez has reached an agreement with Airbnb that would require its local hosts to pay tourist taxes, resulting in at least $8 million a year in tax revenues for the county.
