The family of a 14-year-old student who died after he collapsed during a physical education class at his Wilton Manors school is demanding answers in his death.
Kamarr D. Scott was in P.E. class at Somerset Academy Village when he suddenly collapsed Thursday morning, Broward Sheriff’s Office and school officials said.
Scott was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center where he later died.
Family members said they were told by other kids at the school that Scott had been forced to run extra laps as a form of punishment, but officials haven’t confirmed that detail.
“We’re hoping for some answers, what’s really happened. They’re not gonna tell us the real story,” grandmother Rita Green told reporters Friday.
Family members said Scott was athletic and had no medical issues that they knew about. They said his mother was too upset to speak with reporters.
The charter school had grief counselors on hand Friday to help students and staff cope with the loss.
“Wow, they said suddenly, it might have happened suddenly, and to think this happened in front of other students,” parent Melisha Jackson said. “So sad.”
BSO said they are investigating the student’s death and that the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
