A Florida International University freshman was killed early Sunday morning when she was hit by a car as she crossed a street near the school’s main campus, the university announced.
“This tragedy reminds us how precious and fragile life is,” the university tweeted Sunday afternoon.
Alexis Dale, 18, who was from Denver and lived in San Diego, had just begun studying information technology in June, according to her Facebook page.
Dale was crossing Southwest Eighth Street at 109th Avenue when she was hit, the university said.
Those who knew Dale took to social media Sunday to express their condolences. Many left comments on her most recent Instagram photo.
The accident is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Students who are “personally affected” by the tragedy are being told to reach out to school counselors.
“We ask you to keep Alexis, her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers,” the school said.
