Florida correctional officer in Miami-Dade was charged with sexual battery

A Florida Department of Corrections officer was charged with sexual battery on Friday, reported WPLG Local 10 News.

Miami-Dade police arrested the officer, police officials told the Herald Friday night.

“The actions of this officer are absolutely intolerable,” FDC spokeswoman Michelle Glady told WPLG Local 10 News in an email.

She said the officer, who was not identified, was removed from all inmate contact and an administrative investigation was underway.

The Miami Herald independently confirmed with the Miami-Dade police department that an FDC officer was arrested for sexual crimes, but no other information could be released due to the nature of the crimes.

WPLG Local 10 News reported that the incident involved a male officer and a female inmate in a broom closet at a prison around the Everglades.

In its series investigating Florida prisons, called Beyond Punishment, the Miami Herald revealed corruption, sexual abuse and medical neglect at the largest women’s prison in the nation, Lowell Correctional in Ocala in central Florida.
