Police in Key West have issued an arrest warrant for a former University of Miami quarterback on charges that he allegedly assaulted his former girlfriend while vacationing there earlier this month.
NBC affiliate WFLA-TV reported that Robert Marve, who spent two years with the Hurricanes in 2007 and 2008, will be charged with domestic violence by strangulation after the victim claims he stomped on her throat during an argument.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that a deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office saw Marve and Channing Tomas at Key West International Airport on July 7th with Tomas having bruises on her face and body.
She gave the deputy a written statement about what allegedly happen in the La Concha Hotel before being allowed to leave.
Marve was detained before eventually being allowed to leave as well. Key West Police wrote in their arrest report that Tomas didn’t call officers immediately after the alleged incident because Marve claimed he would kill himself if she did.
Tomas filed a restraining order in Hillsborough County, where both live, earlier this week in which she also detailed an incident that started outside a Tampa club – in which Marve allegedly struck her in the face and bit her lip before ripping off her clothes in his truck and later sexually assaulting her in his home.
Marve’s attorney told the paper that his client denies the allegations.
Named the top high school player in the state of Florida following the 2006 season, Marve chose the Hurricanes and redshirt his first season after suffering a broken arm in a car accident.
He was suspended for the 2008 opener following an arrest in Coconut Grove before going 6-5 as the starter the rest of the regular season. Marve was suspended for the team’s Emerald Bowl appearance against Cal for academic reasons, later announcing he was transferring from the program.
He finished his college career at Purdue before spending two seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
