A weekend fundraiser will honor a South Florida deputy who was killed in the line of duty during a car crash with an alleged drunk driver.

Officials with the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu will hold a joint seminar this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their Fort Lauderdale location at 535 Northeast 13th Street.

The event will raise money for Deputy Benjamin Nimtz, who died on July 21st after his patrol car was struck while he was responding to a call in Deerfield Beach.

“We want to show her (Nimtz’s widow) that the thin blue line is real, we have each other’s backs in times of need,” said BSO deputy Ruben Alvarez, who held organize the event. “She’s part of the family, even though I’ve never met her, I’ve never met the kids, if they need anything from me, I’m happy to help them.”

Officers arrested 32-year-old Darran Johnson and charged him with several counts, including vehicular homicide and DUI causing a crash. He was denied bond during a Thursday hearing.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family of Nimtz.
