A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train Tuesday morning in Pompano Beach.

Though originally identified as a CSX train by Broward Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon, BSO said Tuesday night it was a northbound Tri-Rail train that struck a man whose identity has yet to be confirmed. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sandra King said rescue workers estimated the man’s age as late 20s to early 30s when they answered the 10:34 a.m. call.

King said witnesses told rescue workers the man tried to beat the train across the tracks at 1200 Martin Luther King Blvd. on foot. BSO said witnesses saw the man walk around a train safety gate, ignore the flashing lights and clanging bells and cross the tracks.

The train operator didn’t know anyone had been hit, so continued on into Palm Beach County.

Anyone with further information about this incident can contact Detective Michael Wiley at 954-321-4205.
