When police found three men around a car Thursday night— one with a gunshot wound and one dead — it didn’t take long to find out what happened.
“I shot him and rendered aid,” Lauderhill police said Charles Cook Jr. told them. Cook, 42, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after police said he killed 24-year-old Joshua Askew.
According to the report, Askew and another man were driving “recklessly” up and down Northwest Second Street before parking in front of Cook’s house. Cook, who was standing in his driveway, approached the driver’s side of the gray, four-door Chevrolet Malibu and began to argue with Askew.
Cook pointed his Taurus 40 cal gun at Askew, police said, and shot six times. At least one hit the passenger of the car, who was unidentified but survived.
When police arrived just before 7:45 p.m., police said Cook, who was sitting on the ground next to the car, tossed his gun into the swale and told them he shot Askew. Cook had a concealed carry permit on his person.
