Hurricane Irma in photos: heavy flooding on the Cuban coast, from Matanzas to Havana

Cuba was hit by Hurricane Irma on Friday and “heavy flooding” was reported on the northwest coast, from Matanzas to Havana, with waves of reaching between 19 and 30 feet, according to the Cuban Meteorological Institute.

Ocean waves, which crashed over the Malecón seawall, went as far in as 820 feet into the capital city. At least 1.5 million people were evacuated across the island, where the wind knocked down trees and electric lines and also destroyed homes.
