ISSUES: Bracing for Zika

As temperatures rise and the rainy season begins, protecting ourselves from the typical nagging insects we encounter is a practice most South Floridians are accustomed to. But, with the birth of the Zika Virus, which is linked to birth defects and other ailments such as paralysis, fears have grown for residents and vacationers alike. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine hosted a Zika forum this week, to discuss collaborative efforts and strides in research as health officials try to combat this invasive disease. We speak with their chief of infectious diseases about “significant research efforts” for a vaccine.
