In 2009, when the Metrobus system was in dire need of additional funds, Miami-Dade County Commissioners voted to use the funds from the half penny sales tax to help – subsequently diverting the money earmarked for new transportation projects. Now, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust has voted to withdraw its financial support of the county’s bus system over the course of 3-5 years, in order to “reaffirm the original intent of the People’s Transportation Plan”. Trust Chairman Paul Schwiep explains why this will strengthen the Trust and urges the county to find other sources to fund the buses.
