Far from her family, Ashley Montes is being fed through a tube and suffers from memory loss. She was injured as she was the passenger of a vehicle that slammed into a Miami-Dade police cruiser in November.

Montes’ family said the 27-year-old was the passenger in the Dodge Challenger that burst into flames on Nov. 29 after slamming into a stopped police car on Biscayne Boulevard and 135th Street.

Montes, who lives in North Miami, sustained a severe brain injury.

At first, she was asleep and we didn’t know if she would wake up. And then when she did wake up she was in pain she had to have surgery in her neck for a fractured vertebra,” her friend Chelsea Cohen said. “She’s just confused she doesn’t really know why she’s there and she’s just asking a lot for the family.”

Montes’ family is half a world away dealing with immigration issues.

“It’s very frustrating that we can’t do something to help her, even though we are really trying,” Raquel Montes said.

Montes’ loved ones are requesting for financial help to not only cover her medical expenses but legal assistance related to the process of expediting travel for her mother to enter the United States.
