Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe Martinez, 59, suffered what appears to be an early-morning heart attack Friday, but is speaking and listed in stable condition.

The newly elected Republican representing the West Kendall area had the apparent attack around 2 a.m., daughter Analeen Martinez said.

“He’s good,” the younger Martinez said. “He’s talking.”

A veteran of the County Commission, Martinez returned to his District 11 seat in November after his successor, Juan Zapata, dropped his reelection bid.

A former commission chairman, Martinez gave up the seat in 2012 for a failed mayoral bid. His return brought back a top critic of Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and he’s often the only member of the 13-seat board to speak out against proposed legislation.

Martinez is a retired member of the Miami-Dade police department.
