The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired will unveil a rendering for a new Mobile Eye Care Unit on Wednesday, May 24, during the organization’s “Music Under the Stars” event.
“The new Mobile Eye Care Unit will have a baseball theme inside of it,” Miami Lighthouse President and CEO Virginia Jacko said. “The themes of the eye care unit are usually based on the sponsor of the unit. In this case, the sponsors of this unit are Major League Baseball and the Miami Marlins.”
As part of Major League Baseball’s $5 million All-Star Legacy initiative, the Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program received a $200,000 donation from MLB towards a new Mobile Eye Care Unit. The program, a subsidiary for Miami Lighthouse, provides free eye exams and prescription glasses to low-income students who fail their state-mandated vision tests.
Since the Heiken program’s inception in 1992, the program has conducted more than 111,000 eye exams to low-income students throughout Florida, Jacko said.
The new eye care unit will be the organization’s fifth mobile unit.
In 2016, the Heiken program conducted 10,000 eye care tests. Of those, approximately 80 percent of the children received free prescription glasses from the Heiken program. Each mobile unit conducts approximately 2,000 eye exams per year, Miami Lighthouse said.
Music Under the Stars will be held 6 p.m. at Brickell City Centre. It will feature students from the Miami Lighthouse Music Program, consisting of both sighted and blind musicians and singers. The musicians will play from start to finish a variety of jazz, Latin, dance and modern music.
Guests can look forward to food and wine from Brickell City Centre restaurants and a raffle for gift certificates to some of the mall’s stores.
