Monroe County closes Keys schools ahead of Irma. Miami-Dade will decide later

As Hurricane Irma looms on the horizon, Monroe County announced that its schools will close Wednesday and remain closed until further notice. The Miami-Dade and Broward school districts have not yet reached a decision.

Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mark Porter encouraged residents to put an emergency plan in place and follow warnings and advisories from the Monroe County Emergency Management. Updates on school closures will be posted to the school district’s website and Facebook page. The district also postponed its Sept. 7 school board meeting and all other scheduled meetings until further notice.

The Miami-Dade school district plans to make a decision about school closures Tuesday afternoon, said district spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez-Diego.

In Broward County, the school district does not yet have a firm timeline for deciding on school closures, said spokeswoman Nadine Drew. She said the district is working closely with Broward County’s emergency management team. “We follow their lead in terms of what they’re telling the community and schools and businesses about what needs to happen,” she said.
