One Dead, One Injured in Overnight Shooting in Overtown

One person is dead, another is recovering after being shot in Overtown Sunday.

Miami Police said their shot spotter equipment alerted them to gunfire in the 1200 block of Northwest 1st Avenue at around 1:30 a.m.

Chastity Orsatelli said she was heading to the convenience store with a friend when they had to quickly take cover. The intensity of the shooting upset her.

“Stop the madness,” said Orsatelli. “it’s just crazy. I can’t really explain how I feel. Angry.”

The bullets hit a woman, who is in her 50’s, in the leg. They also hit a man, also in his 50’s, in the neck. Both of them were taken to Ryder Trauma Center, where the woman later died.

Mo Housheya told NBC6 that after working at the Overtown Market for 10 years, the shooting isn’t a surprise in a part of the city he says runs itself.

“It’s a drug war, clearly. It’s a drug war between that corner and that corner. Nobody works, but everybody has money,” said Housheya.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
