More than 200 passengers aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise contracted a gastro-intestinal illness this past week.
According to Royal Caribbean, there were 220 cases reported aboard the Independence of the Seas, a 5-night Caribbean cruise, which left Port Everglades on December 11.
In a statement, Royal Caribbean said the guests were treated onboard with over-the-counter medication.
The ship docked at Port Everglades on Sunday. The cruise line said they are taking steps, like intensive sanitary procedures to minimize the risk of any further issues. The ship will also undergo special additional cleaning procedures before it departs on the next cruise.
Royal Caribbean encourages guests and crew to wash their hands often, as that is the best defense against stomach viruses.
