Samuelian files to run again for Miami Beach Commission

Two years after losing an election by fewer than 100 votes, Mark Samuelian will try again in 2017 to win a spot on the Miami Beach Commission.

Samuelian, 53, opened a campaign account Monday. He’ll run to claim the Group 2 seat held by Commissioner Michael Grieco, who is running for mayor.

“I love Miami Beach,” Samuelian said. “We have a beautiful, beautiful, vibrant community and some big challenges. I think my background will really allow me to help the community I love.”

Samuelian, who has lived on Miami Beach since 2003, invests in financial markets and out-of-state rental properties. He holds a bachelor’s in engineering from Georgia Tech and a master’s from the University of Pennsylvania. He is president of advocacy group Miami Beach United.

Samuelian ran a competitive race in 2015 against John Elizabeth Aleman, and nearly forced an automatic recount. Zachary Eisner, Mohammed Islam, Robert Lansburgh, Joshua Levy and Rafael Velasquez are also campaigning for the Group 2 seat.
