Teresa Gardner shoved four 4-week old puppies into a small backpack, sealed it and swung the backpack “around wildly,” the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
When the puppies were removed from the backpack, they were “shaking and tormented,” a deputy wrote in a report.
Gardner, 27, who according to BSO was also seen inside a Pompano Beach bar throwing the bag on tables and benches, was arrested Sunday and charged with resisting arrest and misdemeanor animal cruelty charge for tormenting animals.
Judge Kim Mollica said during a court hearing Monday, which was posted on the Sun Sentinel website, Gardner could not have contact with domestic pets.
“I find the facts in the probable cause affidavit troubling,” Mollica said.
According to Gardner’s arrest report, Gardner “knowingly and willingly” placed the puppies into a backpack “causing the dogs to smother each other inside and restricting their oxygen levels by sealing the same backpack for a prolonged period of time.”
Deputies arrived at 3 a.m. at Briny Irish Pub, 3440 E. Atlantic Blvd., to find Gardner swinging the bag, BSO said. Witnesses told the deputy that Gardner was inside the Irish pub “roughly throwing the bag, containing the animals, onto the bar tables and benches.,” the deputy wrote in the report.
“The defendant’s actions tormented, and deprived the animals of the necessary oxygen as she transported the animals in a cruel and inhumane manner,” the deputy said in the report.
Gardner was also charged with resisting arrest after deputies say she refused to obey commands to switch patrol cars.
