Miami-Dade police were trying to untangle what led to a Wednesday afternoon car chase that began when a stolen vehicle rammed a police car, then fled and struck another car. One man was ejected from a vehicle and was killed, police said.

A police source confirmed the police vehicle that was smashed was operated by detectives from the county’s Robbery Intervention Detail unit. None of the officers were injured. It wasn’t immediately clear if the crash happened during a chase that involved police.

Police said the accident happened near Northwest 71st Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue, not far from Gwen Cherry Park.

According to police, the stolen vehicle hit a police car then took off and crashed into at least one other car. An ejected passenger was killed, police said. But it wasn’t clear if the person killed was in the car that had struck the police vehicle.

This a breaking news story and will be updated when information becomes available.
