Swimmer in Critical Condition After Nearly Drowning in Key Biscayne

A swimmer who attempted to save a boy from drowning in the waters off Key Biscayne was hospitalized and fighting for his life Monday.

Paramedics responded near the 3000 block of Crandon Boulevard after reports of a drowning, according to Miami Fire Rescue.

Fire rescue officials said a 25-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son were out in the water when they reached a deep area. The boy was struggling to swim back.

A 17-year-old or 18-year-old from another family tried to save him but he started struggling, fire rescue officials said. Two men sitting at a picnic bench ran out to help him and took him to land.

The teen was unconscious and not breathing and was in extremely critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The mother and her child were alert and talking. The mother was also transported to the hospital.
