There’s no big surprise why tight end Julius Thomas is thrilled to now be a member of the Miami Dolphins.

His two best years in the NFL, his two Pro Bowl years, came when Adam Gase was calling plays as the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator and now the two have been reunited.

“It’s been a long hiatus, but I’m glad to be back with my guy and looking forward to it,” Thomas said. “It’s very exciting. If there was one place that I really wanted to be was here. To have this opportunity is something that I’m very blessed to be able to do and I’m just looking forward to getting to work.”

The Dolphins acquired Thomas from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, a transaction that became official Thursday with the start of the new league year.

Thomas is excited about going back to the offense that helped him be so successful with the Broncos in 2013 and 2014 when he had 12 touchdowns in each of those seasons.

“First off, the offense is proven,” Thomas said. “I’ve been able to play in it and know exactly what kind of weapon it can be and what it can do for a team. Some of the things that make it very unique is just the amount of different things you can do. You never really feel like you’re in a bad play. You always feel like either an adjustment is going to be made or the preparation was there so that you can be in the best possible play to have a chance to succeed on offense.

“And then for the tight end, it’s amazing to be able to play with a guy that’s going to allow you to use your whole range of skill sets. Some of the different things that I’ve been able to do in the past and just knowing that I’m going to have an opportunity to do that again is exciting — stretch the field, have some creative routes in there and just try and create separation and then make plays.”

Among other things, Thomas should give the Dolphins a great target in the red zone because of his combination of size and athleticism, and the matchup problem he creates for defenses.

“That’s who I am, that’s what I’m about,” he said. “I see myself as a person that you’ve got to account for me in the red area. I just look to make a play whenever I can. But it’s going to be exciting to be back in a position where I know I’m going to get the opportunity to make those plays.”

Beyond what the move might mean for him on an individual basis, Thomas also is happy to be joining a team coming off a playoff appearance.

“There’s so much talent,” Thomas said. “And then just to be able to come add to that is something that I’m looking forward to. It’s definitely exciting to be a part of a team that’s on the rise, a team that’s playing in the playoffs. That’s what we do it for. I’m really looking forward to joining this team and helping out all these guys that have already been having great success.”
