Thousands gathered in Wilton Manors for the Stonewall Pride Parade to mark the 50th anniversary of the riots in New York that spurred the modern movement of LGBTQ rights in the country.

“You want a nation, a community to embrace all of its citizens and that’s why we have pride. That’s why we have Stonewall,” said Wilton Manors Mayor Justin S. Flippen.

Nearly 50 years ago, police raided Stonewall Inn in New York City, where patrons resisted a police raid in 1969 and helped spark the gay rights movement.

“The struggle of the LGBT plus civil rights movement began before even Stonewall and we haven’t achieved full equality in that community at all and we have to commemorate that,” Flippen said.

A year later, in 1970, the first gay rights parades took place in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago.

The Wilton Manors parade will take place until 11 p.m.
