Two months after a Miami-Dade man was fatally struck by a stray bullet while attending a party in an incident that was caught on camera, his widow is pleading for answers in her husband’s death.
Yemil Arguelles was attending a birthday party in the backyard of a Kendall home in the 7000 block of Southwest 159th Place when he was hit in the chest by a stray bullet. At first the family thought he was having a heart attack.
“Automatically we called 911, and then we found out it was a bullet,” widow Wedmy Fernandez told reporters Tuesday.
Miami-Dade Police said the stray bullet appeared out of nowhere. Fire rescue workers responded to the home and determined the 40-year-old had been shot. Arguelles, who was a well-known priest in the Santeria religion, was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Cell phone footage obtained by Spanish language station Americateve shows Arguelles enjoying himself at the party. As the camera pans over, Arguelles is sitting with another man when a pop is heard and he suddenly grabs his chest before falling out of his chair.
No arrests have been made. Fernandez said the family just wants answers.
“We just need to know. That’s all we’re asking, to know what happened,” she said. “He was someone that everyone loved, and we just want an answer because there’s a lot of people suffering.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
