Woman directing school traffic run over and trapped by an SUV

A woman helping direct drop-off traffic at Coral Springs Taravella High School was run over and trapped by an SUV on Wednesday morning, police say.

Officers and rescuers freed the woman, who was pinned under the vehicle. She was then flown by Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue as a Level 1 trauma alert to Broward North Medical Center.

Police said her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

With the drop-off traffic and confusion common to the first week of school, Taravella stationed the woman a block from the school, 10600 Riverside Dr.

Police said the SUV was leaving a housing development around 7:45 a.m. when the driver made a left off 107th Avenue onto Riverside Drive. That’s when she ran over the traffic director.

The crash remains under investigation, so no citations have been issued yet.
