In 2016 a toxic algae bloom consumed the waters of the Treasure Coast. Originating in Lake Okeechobee, the blue-green slime made its way down the Saint Lucie River towards the east coast – and slinked its way down the Caloosahatchee River out toward Florida’s west coast – impacting local businesses and the economy.

Now, the algae bloom is back. And with it, fears of more lost revenue and potential health risks for residents and wildlife, as Governor Rick Scott declares a state of emergency for seven counties.

Guests:

John Maehl, Manager, Martin County Ecosystems & Restoration Management

Dr. James Sullivan, Executive Director, FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute
